Why is a dental checkup important for babies?
Regular dental exams for children are so important for their preventive health care. During an exam, we can clean their teeth properly and check for tooth decay and any other issues before they become problems. While your baby doesn’t have many, if any, teeth, an infant dental exam is a chance for us to get to know her and provide a great first experience at the dentist.

If your child is 18 months old or below, you are entitled to get the free exam. The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry suggests that children should be seen for a dental exam as early as one year old or within the first six months of the eruption of the baby's tooth. What to Expect During an Infant Dental Exam
A dental exam is performed in what is called a "knee-to-knee" position with Dr. Nam and the parent. This will be the opportunity for Dr. Namrata Hardy to check your child's mouth while the child is on your lap to provide them comfort and security. Dr. Nam will then sit facing the parent with their knees touching. The child should be facing the parent with their legs wrapped around the parent's waist. The child is then gently put to the dentist's lap while the parent holds the child's hand over the child's tummy. The dentist will then examine the child's mouth using a mirror and a soft toothbrush. Infant dental exams should last for just a few minutes, but still, some children may cry during the exam. It is important to remember that a dental exam won't hurt. Remember that without it, the oral condition of your child cannot be assessed. As a mom, Dr. Nam will do all she can to ensure that your child will be comfortable during the assessment while applying methods that are reassuring and expert examining skills.
